Free Tours
The Castle Island Association gives free Guided Tours of the Fort. You can take the Tours and learn some History of the Fort, or you could come along the Tour and enjoy a panoramic view from the second level of the Fort. To get details of the Tour, see the link above.
Twighlight Skyline Viewing
The Fort will open its doors on Thursday, May 30, for the Twighlight Skyline Viewing at 7:00 PM to Dusk. This is a great opportunity to walk around the second tier of the Fort and get a panoramic view of the City, the Islands, and the Harbor as the sunset behind the Boston skyline. This event is held weekly based on weather conditions until the end of July.
Flay Day Saturday, June 14, 2025
Join us, be part of something meaningful, and witness history in action. On Saturday, June 14, 2025, Fort Independence will hold a unique Flay Day celebration. See the link for pictures and details. Bring your worn or tattered American flags to the Fort, and we’ll retire it with the dignity and respect it deserves. This ceremony isn’t just about tradition; it’s a nostalgic experience, especially for students and veterans.
Where History Meets Breathtaking Beauty
Welcome to Fort Independence and Castle Island State Park, a 22-acre paradise at the entrance to Boston Inner Harbor. A place where a rich history of valor and bravery, scenic views, and outdoor adventure converge, offering an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.
Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, this is the destination for you.
Above is an amazing video shot from Bastion A on the second tier of the Fort, taken on a Sunday afternoon in August. The video takes a tour from Deer Island, crossing the President Roads and moving all the way South to Blue Hills. On the way through the video, you can see Boston Harbor Lighthouse, Nix Mate, Long Island, Spectacle Island, Thompson Island, and Blue Hills. In the foreground at the end of the video is a view of the 15-inch Rodman Gun. This spectacular view gives you a very good idea why, in 1631, they selected this site to protect the Neck of Boston.
