The Castle Island Association (CIA), formed in 1977, is a dedicated group of volunteers. They work hard to keep the spirit of Fort Independence alive. Since spring 1981, the CIA has provided guided tours. These tours highlight the rich history of this important landmark. Thanks to their efforts, Fort Independence remains a cherished treasure in Boston.

The Association’s mission is to “…enhance and maintain the Castle Island facility and the Fort, a public space on Boston Harbor, while educating everyone about the historical importance of Castle Island and the Fort…” The volunteers at Castle Island bring a lot of enthusiasm and passion to their tours. The strong tradition of teaching history continues to grow as new volunteers keeping join.

We’d like to remind everyone that the weather can really affect our events.

From June to August 2026, we will offer tours on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 to 3:00 PM, starting on Memorial Day weekend. After Labor Day weekend, these tours will be available on Sundays only during the same hours.

We’re also thrilled to announce that the Thursday Twilight Skyline Viewing will return! Starting in late May, you can join us at 7:00 PM until dusk. This special event will take place only in June and July. Enjoy the stunning sunset over the Boston skyline. Watch planes take off and land near the Fort. Experience one of the best views of the bustling Boston Harbor.
