Founded in 1977, the Castle Island Association (CIA) is a dedicated group of volunteers who keep the spirit of Fort Independence alive. The Association was established through postings at Sully’s.
In the spring of 1981, the new Association began offering guided tours of preserving this historical artifact; they’re the reason this landmark remains a Boston treasure.
Some excerpts from the Association’s charter include: “…its efforts towards improving and maintaining the Castle Island facility and the Fort, a public area on Boston Harbor, to educate the public about the historical significance of Castle Island and the Fort….”
The Castle Island volunteers work tirelessly and enthusiastically, providing fabulous tours of Fort Independence. Bill Spain, President of the Castle Island Association, is a walking encyclopedia on the history of both the fort and the island.
