FORT HISTORY

Castle Island Association

The Association was started by posting at Sully’s and incorporated in August 1977. In the spring of 1981, the new Association began to give guided tours of the inside of the Fort. Some excerpts of the Association’s charter include “…its efforts towards improving and maintaining the Castle Island
facility and the Fort, a public area on Boston Harbor, to educate the public about the historical significance of Castle and the Fort
….”

The Castle Island volunteers are tireless workers, enthusiastic, and give Fabulous tours of Fort Independence. Bill Spain, President of the Castle Island Association, is a walking encyclopedia of the  Fort and the Island’s history.
