The Castle Island Association was established through a posting on the wall at Sully’s and officially incorporated as a charity company in August 1977. In the spring of 1981, the new Association began offering guided tours of the interior of the Fort. Some excerpts from the Association’s charter include: “…its efforts towards improving and maintaining the Castle Island facility and the Fort, a public area on Boston Harbor, to educate the public about the historical significance of Castle Island and the Fort….”
The Castle Island volunteers work tirelessly and enthusiastically, providing fabulous tours of Fort Independence. Bill Spain, President of the Castle Island Association, is a walking encyclopedia on the history of the Fort and the island.
