The Castle Island Association (CIA), established in 1977, is a fantastic group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the spirit of Fort Independence. Since spring 1981, the CIA has offered guided tours that share the rich history of this important landmark. Because of their hard work, Fort Independence remains a beloved treasure in Boston.
The Association’s mission is to “…enhance and maintain the Castle Island facility and the Fort, a public space on Boston Harbor, while educating everyone about the historical importance of Castle Island and the Fort…” The volunteers at Castle Island bring a lot of enthusiasm and passion to their tours. Bill Spain, President of the Castle Island Association, generously shares his knowledge with every volunteer. He teaches them about the fascinating history of the fort and the island, making each visit truly special for you, the visitor.
